Theirs by Midnight Read online

Now king’s consorts, Eilam and Noah struggle to adjust to life in the castle. Things aren’t helped with King Adriel’s desire to hold a ball in their honor—in a little over a week’s time. A thousand guests is a logistical nightmare in and of itself, especially since the guests of honor are in charge of Midnight’s security. Both men try to discourage Adriel from holding the event, but the king is accustomed to having his every whim granted and won’t be dissuaded.

Adriel wants to show the whole of Midnight he’s fully accepted his mates. After the months of pushing them away, he feels the need to shout his affection from the mountaintops. Perhaps it’s a bit of guilt driving him to make the grand gesture, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, is it? Eilam and Noah just need to warm to the idea.

To get his way, Adriel promises Eilam and Noah twenty-four hours alone with him in his private realm immediately after the ball—where he won’t be allowed to use his magic during the hours between arriving and departing. He’s not quite sure what Eilam and Noah have planned, but whatever it may be, it’s already making him tremble with delight.

  About the Author

  Author Note

A few days after I sent in the final manuscript for Dead by Midnight (Midnight, Mississippi Book Three), my characters whispered in my mind that they weren’t done telling their story.

Before I could move on to Midnight Book Four, I had to finish King Adriel, Eilam, and Noah’s story.

As this is a continuation of their tale—please read Dead by Midnight BEFORE reading this novella. It builds on their existing tale.

  Enjoy!

  Chapter One

  Castle Midnight

Noah lifted his lids, confused for a moment where he was. Silk sheets were smooth under his body. Heavy brocade curtains covered windows that rose to what had to be ten-foot ceilings. Light peeked through the slits between, hinting that morning was upon them. A warm body lay against him, and it took a moment to remember that it wasn’t Eilam’s. He rolled over and glanced down at his mate. King Adriel seemed to instinctively cuddle into his arms.

A smile spread across his lips. Glancing over at Eilam sleeping on Adriel’s other side, it all came back to him. The day before, he and his brother bear had been made king’s consorts in front of most of the court. The warlock, who had done his best to avoid a mating, was now theirs.

Noah looked about the sumptuous bedroom, still not completely capable of absorbing what had transpired. That this was their new home. Adriel had lived there for many years without them, but for him and his brother bear, this was a whole new world.

Eilam knew it better than he. His brother bear had run the king’s security and had been in and out of the castle for some time. Noah hadn’t been allowed entry—Adriel had known he couldn’t continue to keep them at bay if there had been two against one. The minute the king had realized the bond he had with Eilam, the man had tried to ignore the fact that Noah existed.

Now, Noah refused to be ignored.

Noah pressed his lips to the king’s forehead, and the man stirred against him.

After a moment, Adriel’s eyes fluttered open. A confused look crossed his beautiful face. When his gaze lifted and met Noah’s, the smile that soon formed there melted Noah’s heart.

He drew in a breath, holding it as he felt the connection they shared deepen.

  He’s mine.

  Finally.

  “Good morning,” the king whispered.

“Good morning,” Noah murmured back. He lifted his hand and brushed back a lock of his mate’s long, black hair. The silky strands slipped from his fingers. Noah lifted another lock, twirling it around one finger before meeting the king’s stare once more.

Adriel’s lavender eyes were alight with emotion. He lifted slightly and placed a genteel kiss to Noah’s lips. After the night the three of them had just shared, Noah didn’t feel anywhere close to genteel. He slid his hand through the king’s tresses and tugged the warlock even closer. Forcing his lips firmly against Adriel’s, he took control.

Their naked bodies came together, chest to chest. Against him, he could feel Adriel’s heartbeat quicken. As did his own. Licking along the seam of the man’s lips, Noah demanded entry. Adriel moaned and opened for him. He growled, his bear spirit demanding more.

  They’d already claimed him.

His bear would demand that they claim him over and over again.

  Forever.

Adriel pulled away, breathless. His eyes and mouth open wide, he drew in a deep lungful before meeting Noah’s stare. “You’re going to drive me insane with kisses such as those.”

“That,” Noah murmured before placing a loving nip along the king’s nape, “is the plan.”

Adriel moaned lowly and writhed against Noah. He could feel the king’s cock against his thigh. The warlock was hard as stone—just as he was. All the blood had raced to that one spot of his body, leaving him feeling woozy with need.

  “Playing without me?”

Noah turned his gaze to see Eilam awake and watching them from the other side of the huge bed.

“Just waiting for you to finally wake up,” Noah said with a smile. “Sleepyhead.”

“I worked very, very hard last night,” Eilam said as he slid his body closer and lined himself against Adriel’s back. “I needed my rest so I could be ready for another round.”

Memories of the night before danced in Noah’s mind. After the announcement the king had made, they’d immediately retired to the king’s rooms. After a light meal had been brought up—which they’d barely eaten—they’d made love all night, into the wee hours. Over and over, they’d memorized the curves and swells of the king’s body. Noah was well on his way to being an expert in the topic.

Noah ran a finger along Adriel’s neck, already knowing the back of it was an erogenous zone for the man. Once the tip of Noah’s finger barely caressed that certain spot he’d learned last night, Adriel’s eyes fell closed and his mouth parted on a gasp.

The look made Noah’s cock jerk. He inhaled deeply, nearly moaning from the sight.

When Adriel’s eyes reopened, there was a dreamy, lustful look to th
em. Noah nearly moaned again as his body responded. He was more than happy to fulfill that need for the rest of their days.

Noah lifted his stare to Eilam, silently telling his brother bear what he intended. The knowing look in Eilam’s made his heart quicken. He had so much love for his brother bear, love they’d shared for so long without a third. Now, they had their triad and could finally one day become a family. He held Eilam’s stare as he drew Adriel closer for another kiss. The corner of Eilam’s lips hitched as he began to kiss a hot trail over Adriel’s shoulder and up his neck.

  To that exact, perfect spot.

Adriel moaned even louder. Ever so slightly, his body began to tremble.

Noah spread his hand along the warlock’s hip and let it roam down over one bare ass cheek. He squeezed, kneading the flesh in his hand, before moving down farther and sliding a finger along the split between.

Eilam ran his hand along the top of Noah’s. Noah lifted his hand and laced his fingers in through his brother bear’s—and then they ran their hands over Adriel together for a moment before drifting apart to tempt their king even higher.

Lips, tongues, and fingers explored, bringing them both closer to their limits. Sighs filled the room, their animalistic moans music to Noah’s ears. Heat filled him, the bear within needing this bond made flesh.

He grasped the king’s hard staff in his hand, ready to bring Adriel to release.

And the double doors into the bedroom whipped open. A servant entered and crossed the room to the curtains. He drew them open, and sunlight flooded the room. “Godsdamn it,” Noah cried, shutting his eyes to the intensity. “What are you doing?”

“Out! Now!” Eilam cried to the servant.

The man looked stunned and confused, spinning as if to leave, but stopping himself and turning back. He stared at his king.

Noah then realized the man wouldn’t leave unless Adriel ordered him to.

“Leave us… for a moment,” Adriel said, no anger in his tone.

For a moment? That won’t be enough time! Noah turned to glare at Adriel while the flustered servant slipped silently from the room. “Do he not know how to knock?”

Adriel lifted a brow. “My valet has gotten me up at the same time, every day, for most of my life.”

“You had no valet with you at the beach house and survived it,” Noah said.

They’d just returned from spending time together in Adriel’s private dimension—because the king had been attacked and Eilam had been hurt. It had only been the three of them, alone, with no servants.

No one to interrupt their fun.

  “That was different,” Adriel said.

“Well, things are different now. Your servants can’t just traipse in whenever they wish and interrupt us,” Noah spat.

“It is their duty, one they do well,” the king said, rising from the bed. “Breakfast will be here shortly.”

Noah grasped the king’s wrist, tugging him back to bed. “We’re not done here.”

The king leaned in to press a kiss to Noah’s nose. “Yes. We are. You’ll have to save things until tonight.”

Things. Noah looked down at his hard cock, knowing full well it wouldn’t wait another minute. “I don’t think so.”

The king pulled from his grasp. “I have a kingdom to run. I have duties to fulfill.”

Ignored again. Noah growled, his inner bear not happy with the turn of events. He glanced at Eilam. “You could help, you know?”

Eilam stretched, the sheet tented over his still hard cock. “I know better than to argue with our sovereign. He will always win.”

Adriel looked over his shoulder, a knowing smile on his lips.

“Best you let him think he’s won,” Eilam added under his breath, out of the king’s earshot.

Noah rolled his eyes. “Outside this room, he’s the king. In here, he’s our mate.”

“No,” Adriel said as he drew on his dressing gown, hiding his sumptuous body from view. “I am always the king. That will always come first.”

Noah lifted a brow. “And we’re just to run along and do your bidding, hmm?”

“You are king’s consorts. You have duties just as I have.”

  “And those are?”

Adriel grinned, but seemed to search for an answer. “Supporting your king.”

Noah crossed his arms over his chest. “Uh-huh.”

Adriel spread his hands out wide. “I gave you the position of Sergeant at Arms.”

“Without explaining exactly what the position entailed,” Noah said. He turned to Eilam. “Do you know what you’re supposed to be doing now, Sheriff of Midnight?”

“Pretty much what I was already doing,” Eilam said, sitting up and resting his back against the headboard. “No one has held either title for the last sixty years, so I assume they’re window dressing.” Eilam turned to Noah. “We’ll work together to incorporate your men onto the king’s guard and monitor the investigation into the vampires. With you here at the castle, supervising the king’s guard, that will free me up to better coordinate with the police and transit authority. Once we get you and your men caught up to speed, of course.”

“See… you both have duties to attend to, as do I,” the king said as he walked to the bedroom door. Whisking it open, he spoke to someone.

The servant re-entered the bedroom, his gaze averted from the bed. Curtains were opened, light flooding the room.

“I suppose we’re getting up,” Noah grumbled.

“We’ll get used to it here,” Eilam murmured under his breath.

“So says you,” Noah shot back. He grabbed his briefs and pulled them on as several more servants rolled in a cart filled with breakfast. His stomach grumbled at the scent of bacon and whatever else was under the shining silver domes. The servants began pulling the leftover plates and trays from dinner from the table before laying out breakfast.

Crossing the room, Noah lifted one of the domes and snuck a piece of bacon out as the houseman set the small table. He popped it into his mouth before watching as the king’s valet began dressing Adriel.

He paused, observing as the valet did his job. Adriel did next to nothing, just placing his hands or legs in the appropriate holes when they were lifted for him. Noah shook his head and stole another piece of bacon from a place setting. A partially dressed Eilam took a seat at the table and dug in.

“This is part of the set-up I think I might like. Food delivery,” Eilam said as he chewed.

Noah was about to sit when the valet turned to him. “Might I be of assistance in dressing you for breakfast?”

Noah looked down at his skivvies—which he didn’t want to be wearing at that moment— and then lifted his head, shaking it. “No thanks. I can dress myself.”

Adriel swept by and took a seat. “You can’t sit at the breakfast table like that.”

  “Why can’t I?” Noah asked.

  “It’s… improper.”

Noah sighed before marching over to the bed. He grabbed the robe he’d worn for all of two seconds the night before and put it on. Returning to the table, he eyed Adriel. “Better?”

From the indignant look on Adriel’s face, apparently not. “I suppose it will have to do.”

Noah sat down as both Eilam and Adriel took copies of the Midnight Times and began to read. As he dug into what was left on his plate, all he could see was the back side of the newspapers.

“Debate seems to continue over the vampire community,” Eilam said as he folded and laid the paper beside his plate. “Seems many want all vampires to be kicked out of Midnight.”

The king lowered his paper. “We have had a small vampire community almost as long as Midnight has been in existence. Not all vampires are like the Suns.”

The Midnight Suns were a vampire gang behind all of the recent violence. Days before, Noah had led a team in to take down an illegal portal—which had been used in the attacks on the king. While doing so, they’d killed numerous vampires and incurred some damages of the
ir own.

Adriel’s uncle, Ralnur, had been held prisoner and barely survived. They’d thought him close to death, but while in the hospital, he’d made a miraculous recovery.

  And become a vampire.

There had been no bites on Adriel’s uncle when they’d found him. Yet somehow, a vamp had gotten into the hospital—where the warlock had been under police protection—and bitten him there. It was illegal for witchfolk to be made vampire, so they had been searching for the vamp who’d done the deed.

Especially considering the king’s assassins had been vampire-witch outlaws.

“There are decent vampires,” Noah said, thinking of his own half-vamp. Kane was a member of his team and had proven himself to be a strong addition. Noah wasn’t sure how Kane fought the bloodlust he had, but the man apparently had some amazing will to be able to do it.

A knock came to the door.

Adriel frowned and turned to his valet. “See who that is.”

Noah watched as the man crossed the bedroom before returning to his breakfast. The valet came back to the table a moment later. “Theis is here with news you’ve all been awaiting.”

  “Send him in,” Eilam said.

“These are my private rooms,” Adriel snapped.

“Our private rooms,” Eilam corrected, one brow rising.

The king lifted his imperial chin but said nothing.
